What a Queensland Plumbing Licence Covers
Queensland requires an occupational licence for anyone doing plumbing or drainage work, and a contractor licence for the business taking the job on, both issued by the QBCC. The occupational licence shows the holder is competent in the trade. The contractor licence shows the business can meet its debts and manage jobs properly.
Three classes sit inside the trade:
Plumber
covers the water supply and the fixtures on it, apart from jobs that need a separate endorsement.
Drainer
looks after below-ground drainage, minus anything on the endorsement list.
Gasfitter
gas fitting is licensed separately, and Queensland lets only a licensed gasfitter handle gas work, from installing pipework through to testing and certifying it.
Before a gas job begins, you are entitled to sight the worker's gas licence. Regulated work splits into three buckets: jobs under a council permit, notifiable jobs and minor jobs, and a licensed tradesperson must handle each one. The QBCC says that rule protects the house, the people living in it and the owner's legal position.

Paperwork and Inspections After a Job
Oversight splits between the QBCC and your local council: the QBCC licenses the trade and records notifiable jobs, while the City of Brisbane assesses applications, issues permits and inspects.
Paperwork you should end up with after a job:
A Form 4
once notifiable work wraps up. You get a copy as the owner, and the QBCC can provide a replacement if yours goes missing.
A gas compliance certificate
the moment a new gas install or alteration finishes, with a copy to the network operator within 5 days where the property is on a gas network.
You can ask for a council inspection at any point while the work is under way. The QBCC website also lets you verify a licence, and a search by address reveals whether a Form 4 was lodged for a property. Gas jobs are covered in more detail on our gas fitting page.
