Every job is done by a licensed plumber, and there's no extra charge for nights, weekends or public holidays. Gas has its own rules in Queensland, and this page sets them out plainly.

From the Meter or Cylinder to the Appliance

Gas work means installing, removing or altering a gas system, and repairing, servicing, testing or certifying one, along with all the pipework and connections that feed it. That is the Queensland Government's definition, and it covers both fuel gases used in Queensland homes.

The two fuels arrive differently. Natural gas comes through a pipe from the street, while liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is stored on the property in cylinders or a tank. The work is the same either way: everything between the supply point and the appliance burner belongs to gasfitting.

A gasfitter also handles the upkeep. Cookers, barbecues and similar appliances should be checked and serviced periodically, and installed and run to the manufacturer's instructions. A service visit is gas work in the same way a new install is.

Who May Do Gas Work in Queensland

Queensland reserves gas work for one group: licensed gasfitters. Nobody else may legally fit, alter or disconnect gas, and that includes handymen and appliance installers without the licence.

Before work begins, ask the tradesperson to show you their gas work licence. It is a reasonable request, and any licensed gasfitter will produce it without fuss.

Plumbing and drainage work runs on a different pair of credentials. A tradesperson needs an occupational licence to do that work, plus a contractor licence to take jobs on as a business, and the QBCC issues both. Many gasfitters hold plumbing licences as well, since the two trades share pipe skills.

Who Receives the Gas Certificate

A finished gas installation or alteration ends with paperwork: the compliance certificate covering the gas system. It certifies the work complies with the rules, and the licence holder gives the owner the certificate immediately on completion.

There is a second copy to know about. Where the fuel gas comes through a distribution network, a copy goes to the network operator within 5 days.

Not every gas job produces one. The certificate attaches to installations and alterations, not to every repair or service. For the full picture on plates, copies and what to check when selling, see our gas compliance certificates page.

Why Gas Quotes Differ From Job to Job

The price of gas work turns on the job itself, how easily we reach the pipework, how many gas points the job involves, and whether a supply check applies. A fixed quote settles the figure before any work starts, so nothing gets added later.

What drives each one:

  1. The type of job

A cooktop swap is a different job from running a new gas line to an outdoor kitchen, and each adds pipe joints and testing.

  2. Access to the pipework

A run through an open subfloor is quick; a line buried in a wall takes longer to reach.

  3. The count of gas points

Every extra point means more pipe, more joints and more testing.

  4. A supply check

Before an extra appliance goes in, the gasfitter confirms the supply can carry the extra load. That covers cylinder storage and vaporisation rate for LPG, the meter's capacity, and pipe sizing.

Housing age shapes the access question here. Newmarket's pre-1940 Queenslanders and post-war brick homes put gas lines through very different wall cavities, and the townhouses near the shopping centre pack fixtures tight against shared walls. We quote for what your place actually needs.

Gas Fitting Questions From Newmarket Homes

Call (07) 3524 0766

What does a gas fitter do at a home?

A gas fitter installs, removes, alters, repairs, services, tests and certifies gas systems, including every pipe and connection. Servicing a cooker or barbecue counts too, because gasfitting covers upkeep as well as new installs.

How do I check a gas fitter's licence in Newmarket?

Ask to see the gas work licence before any work starts. For plumbing work, the QBCC's online registers also show whether a plumber is licensed and whether a Form 4 has been registered for your Newmarket property.

What certificate follows a new gas installation?

A compliance certificate for the gas system. The licence holder gives it to the owner immediately on completion of an installation or alteration, and it certifies the work meets the rules.

Who receives the gas compliance certificate?

The owner receives the original. Where a distribution network supplies the gas, the operator gets a copy within 5 days. Our certificates page for gas compliance has the rest of the detail.

Does a new gas appliance in a Newmarket home need a supply check first?

Yes, it does. The gasfitter checks whether the supply can meet the extra demand: how the LPG is stored and its vaporisation rate, the gas meter and its capacity, and pipe sizing.

Should I call a gas fitter or the gas supplier for a leak?

If you can smell gas, go outside and ring from there. The supplier's emergency number sits on your gas bill. A licensed gasfitter then does the repair, and our gas leak repairs page covers the detail.
