Queensland's plumbing rules shape every bathroom job here. Work sorts into unregulated, minor and notifiable categories, and the category decides the paperwork. We hold QBCC No: 15024607, and every job is done by a licensed plumber.
For the full spread of work we do, start at our Newmarket home page. The tap and toilet plumbing page covers spouts and cisterns, and the kitchen and laundry plumbing page handles the other wet rooms.

The Pipes Behind Your Shower, Basin and Bath
A bathroom runs on three systems: supply pipes, waste pipes and the fixtures at the end of the runs. Hot and cold pipework feeds the shower, basin and bath, with a mixer or pair of taps controlling each outlet. Waste lines then take the spent water to the sewer.
Newmarket's housing mix decides how those systems were built. Raised Queenslanders leave the pipe runs accessible under the floor, while the townhouses and units packed in around the village centre put bathrooms back to back in shared-wall footprints. In those tighter builds, thin flexi hoses and push-fit joints tend to fail first, and a corroded fitting can weep inside a wall for days before swollen skirting gives the game away.
Tapware counts as part of the system too. Pre-war houses here still carry washer taps and older mixer patterns, and matching parts to those eras is its own skill. Faults at the shower itself are covered on our shower repairs page.

Which Bathroom Jobs Need a Licensed Plumber
Yes, only a licensed plumber may carry out regulated bathroom work, and the jobs you can legally do yourself make a very short list. Queensland's licensing rules exist to protect the house, your health and your rights as an owner, so nearly everything in a bathroom is regulated.
The unregulated list comes down to a handful of items:
Shower heads
unscrewing an old head and fitting a new one is unregulated.
Tap washers
renewing a tap washer or the jumper valve beneath it is unregulated too.
Everything else
a full tap replacement is licensed work.
Whether the work is licensed or not, it still has to meet the standard the plumbing codes set. That applies to a DIY shower head swap just as it applies to ours.
You can check any plumber before booking. The QBCC keeps online registers where you can confirm a tradie's licence and see whether a Form 4 has been recorded for your property.

WELS, WaterMark and the Temperature Limit
Any tap or shower sold for Australian homes carries two marks: WaterMark certification and registration under the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards scheme (WELS). Each covers a different thing.
WaterMark
certifies the product is safe and fit for purpose under the national plumbing code.
WELS
registers the product's water efficiency, with the star rating and consumption shown on the label.
Star ratings carry a legal minimum in some settings. New houses, townhouses and sole-occupancy units need showerheads and tapware rated at 3 stars or better, though that minimum does not extend to renovations.
One temperature rule completes the set. Queensland requires a temperature control device to hold the water at your hot taps at no more than 50°C in a home. Business Queensland rates that level as enough for domestic hygiene, and it cuts the scalding risk sharply. Our hot water plumbing page covers the system side of that rule.

Rules That Apply When a Bathroom Changes
Two categories govern a bathroom change: swapping a fixture like for like is minor work, while adding one or relocating an existing one is notifiable work. The split decides the paperwork.
Minor work
replacing a fixture or fitting with an equivalent one still needs a licensed plumber, but skips the council permit and the Form 4.
Notifiable work
putting in an extra fixture, or moving one that's already there, needs no permit from council either. We lodge a Form 4 with the QBCC inside 10 business days of completing the job, and you get a copy.
Renovations
bathroom additions, extensions and renovations in an existing building fall under the notifiable category too, with no permit or inspection from council.
That last point surprises plenty of owners. Brisbane City Council assesses plumbing applications and issues permits for certain work, but a standard bathroom reno inside an existing home is not one of them.
Ground conditions feed into any fixture move as well. Dry-season shrinking around old earthenware joints can pull a waste run out of line between the shower and the sewer, so we check the drainage side before quoting a relocation. If water escaping the shower recess is the real problem, start at our leaking shower repairs page.
The Bathroom Jobs We Cover
Every bathroom job on our list has its own write-up. Pick the one that matches yours:
- Shower repairs: drips, weak flow, mixer and temperature faults at the shower.
- Leaking showers: water getting out of the recess and where it turns up.
- Bathroom renovation plumbing: full strip-outs and refits, from the fixture plan to the final pressure test.
- Dripping shower heads: why a head keeps dripping after the taps close.
A full renovation is the biggest of those, and the one where the notifiable rules bite hardest. Its page walks through what changes and what stays.

Bathroom Plumbing Questions From Newmarket Homes
Call (07) 3524 0766Do bathroom changes in Newmarket need a council permit?
No, not for standard notifiable work. The plumber lodges a Form 4 with the QBCC instead, and council never sees it. A permit only enters the picture in special situations, such as when a building goes over a shared drain.
Is moving a basin or shower notifiable work?
Yes, in an existing building. Adding a fixture or relocating one already there counts as notifiable work, and a Form 4 goes to the QBCC inside 10 business days of completion.
What certification must taps and showers carry?
Both of them: WaterMark certification plus WELS registration. WaterMark proves the product meets the code's safety requirements, and WELS handles water efficiency.
Who maintains the shower tray in a Newmarket unit?
The owner or occupier of the lot maintains it, even where the tray sits beyond the lot's boundaries. That rule covers properties in a Queensland community titles scheme.
What affects the cost of bathroom plumbing?
Three things mainly: how many fixtures get added or moved, how good the access to the pipes is, and which paperwork applies. Flat-rate pricing covers it all, set out in a fixed quote before any work starts.
Does bathroom plumbing work come with a warranty?
Yes, our labour carries a lifetime labour warranty. Our Fix-It-or-It's-Free guarantee backs it (T&Cs apply), and if we're late, $100 comes off your bill.
