Leaking Shower Repairs in Newmarket
Two things let water escape a shower recess: the plumbing, which a licensed plumber fixes, or the waterproofing, which belongs to another trade's licence. Neither should wait. Damp travels through a wall into the next room, and in a unit block the stain often lands on a ceiling downstairs.

Leaking shower repair in Newmarket starts with proving which source you have, and we work across Newmarket and the suburbs around it.

What a Plumber Can Fix in a Leaking Shower
A plumber fixes the plumbing side: the mixer, the supply pipes behind the wall, the joints up to the shower head and the waste below the floor. Failed waterproofing is not plumbing work; a cracked membrane is a waterproofer's job, under a separate licence class.
Testing works out which of the two you have before any wall comes off. Fixing a broken pipe, or swapping a fitting, is minor work: a QBCC licensee does the job, without a permit and without a Form 4.
Mixer and cartridge faults sit on our shower repairs page, and the whole wet area falls under our bathroom plumbing work. Stripping the room out is renovation work, which our renovation plumbing page covers.

When Water Through the Wall Is a Shower Leak
The signs turn up outside the recess, and any one of them earns a check:
- a damp or stained wall beside the bathroom, or staining on the ceiling below
- skirting boards that swell, or floorboards that cup
- tiles that come loose, or that sound hollow when tapped
- bubbling or peeling paint, mould and a musty odour
Water through the wall is not always dramatic. A concealed leak on the supply side can run within a wall for weeks, quietly wasting water, until a steep bill or visible damage gives the leak away.
At the last census, 28.9 per cent of local dwellings were flats or apartments. In those buildings, water escaping a shower base often stains the home below before anyone upstairs notices.

Telling a Pipe Leak From a Membrane Leak
Start with the water meter while the whole house is switched off: a moving dial means the pressurised supply is leaking somewhere on the property, and a still dial clears the supply side. Give the test at least an hour with no water used anywhere on the property.
A plumber then isolates stretches of pipe and pressure-tests each one to find whichever stretch drops. After that comes the shower itself, running:
- water at the mixer, the arm or the wall plate is a fitting fault
- water that appears only once the base has emptied suggests a waste or waterproofing fault
A still meter does not settle the question, though. The meter only catches leaks on the pressurised supply, so a leak past the mixer shows while someone showers, and a drain-side leak shows once the water has drained away.

Where Plumbing Leaks Start Around a Shower
The plumbing sources sit in four places: the mixer and its seals, the pipes and joints in the wall, the run to the head, and the waste and trap below. Each behaves on its own clock:
- The hot and cold supply lines hold pressure all day and night, so a weeping joint there never rests.
- The stretch up to the head holds pressure only while someone showers, so a leak at the arm, the elbow or the hose shows mid-use and stops once the shower is off.
- The waste and trap carry water only while the base drains, so a leak there appears during use and again just after.
The Queenslanders off Wilston Road carry supply runs fitted decades before push-fit joints existed, so age shapes where we look first.

Owners, Tenants and Body Corporates Compared
Under a community titles scheme, the lot's owner or the occupier can carry the upkeep of the shower tray, even when the tray is outside the lot. The pipes follow a different split.
Cold pipes within a boundary structure, such as a wall between two lots, belong to the body corporate. A line serving one lot, inside a wall that is not a boundary, is that owner's.
Rentals run on a simpler rule. A tenant reports faults to the property manager as soon as possible, and a burst water service or a serious supply leak is on the Act's emergency repairs list.
Anything not listed counts as routine, and the owner or manager arranges the repair. A leaking shower is not on the emergency list.
The QBCC calls defective building work faulty or below standard, such as work that falls short of the Building Act 1975, the national code or a relevant Australian Standard. An owner raises a suspected defect with the tradesperson who did the job first.
The QBCC can help if the tradesperson refuses, and a complaint within 3 months of finding the fault preserves the owner's insurance options. Defective work that admits water into a building falls in the QBCC's structural defect category.

Shower Leak Questions Answered
Call (07) 3524 0766How do I tell a plumbing leak from a waterproofing leak?
Watch the timing rather than the wet patch. A moving meter with the whole house switched off means the supply pipes. A leak that shows only while someone showers sits past the mixer. Damp that lingers once the base empties points to the drain side or the waterproofing.
How does a water meter test show a shower leak?
Note the meter reading, red figures included, during a period when nothing on the property should be drawing water, then read the dial again at least an hour later. Any change means a leak on the pressurised side; a still dial points to the drain side instead.
Can a shower leak be found without breaking tiles?
Yes, usually. The meter test and a pressure test of isolated pipe sections show whether the supply pipes are at fault before any tile comes off. Pinpointing the exact spot can still need access behind a wall or under the floor.
Who looks after a shower tray in a Newmarket unit?
A lot's owner or occupier can be responsible for the tray, even where the tray is not part of the lot. Cold pipes within a boundary structure belong to the body corporate, while a line serving one lot inside a non-boundary wall is that owner's.
Who fixes a leaking shower in a Newmarket rental?
The tenant reports the fault to the property manager as soon as the tenant can. A burst water service or a serious supply leak is on the Act's emergency repairs list. A leaking shower is not listed, so the repair counts as routine and the owner or manager arranges the fix.
